We need volunteers ………

The International Congress on AIDS in Asia and the Pacific  brings together over 4000 people working in, infected with or affected by from across Asia and Pacific for bold and innovative discussions and sharing of current research results and thought. 

For the first time, in August 2009, this Congress will be held in Bali Indonesia

 

9th ICAAP Volunteer Recruitment Information 

The aim of the volunteer program is to provide the opportunity to members of the community to be a part of the 9th ICAAP, the second largest AIDS forum in the world.   The program is particularly aimed at local youth and / or people living with or affected by HIV who would not ordinarily be able to attend a congress such as this.

As a volunteer at the 9th ICAAP you will have the opportunity to make a significant contribution toward the success of the Congress, meet new people, make contact with others who share similar interests and are, perhaps, leaders in their field, learn new skills and gain information on the latest developments in HIV prevention, care and support.

Volunteers are a valuable resource for the 9th ICAAP Program and will be utilized across all program areas they will come from a variety of backgrounds and possess a range of different skills. Volunteers will not receive any form of payment, including wages, allowance, accommodation or other kinds of compensation for their services but they will receive training, recognition and a feeling of pride that they were part of such an important, prestigious event in the region.
                            

Skills Common to All Volunteers:

  • Minimum age: 18 years
  • Ability to speak & understand English
  • Good customer service skills
  • Willing to work unpaid flexible hours
  • Dedication to work and commitment to team work
  • Empathy and understanding of the issues affecting people living with HIV
  • A non-judgmental approach to working with people from a wide range of communities and backgrounds.
  • Willing to participate in orientation/training before the Congress

 

Typical roles may include:

  • Help desk volunteers
  • Ushers – general and for social events
  • Community Forum hosts and ushers
  • Cultural programme volunteers – performers, ushers and artists hosts
  • Registration assistants
  • Office assistants
  • IT and Communications volunteers
  • Messengers/runners
  • Nurses, doctors and hosts
  • Youth Forum facilitators and assistants.

  

The 9th ICAAP presents exciting opportunities for people the meet the following criteria:

  • Minimum age: 18 years
  • Able to speak & understand English
  • Good customer service skills
  • Willing to work on their own free will and with complete disregard for long hours and demanding tasks
  • Able to contribute full-time before and during the congress
  • Willing to commit to a negotiated schedule, arrive punctually and work enthusiastically for duration of shift.
  • Aware of personal limits and willing to consult with supervisor when not confident of solution.
  • Dedicated to work and committed to team work
  • Have empathy and understanding of the issues affecting people living with HIV
  • Have a non-judgmental approach to working with people from a wide range of communities and backgrounds.
  • For some volunteers – have specialist knowledge/skills in areas of identified need.

 

If selected

  • you will be assigned to duties and be rostered to work in a schedule that takes your preferences into account
  • As a Volunteer you will be required to attend a 2 day comprehensive training and briefing session to equip you for the task and to familiarise you with the venue. Your comments and observations on the management of the Congress will form an important part of our Post Congress Report

 

Here’s the Deal for Volunteers
All volunteers will receive a number of benefits and entitlements for donating their time at the Congress.

  • Volunteers are entitled to free Congress registration and those under the age of 26 years of age will also be able to attend the Youth forum free of charge.
  • Volunteers will receive necessary training, information and support
  • Volunteers will be provided with meals and refreshments
  • Volunteers will receive three T-shirts and a volunteer ID.
  • Volunteers will receive an Appreciation Certificate signed by the Congress Chair and Volunteer Coordinator
  • Some volunteers will receive a personalised letter of thanks.
  • All volunteers received written references (if requested)
  • Volunteers will be invited to the closing ceremony of the Congress.

 

Please note that Air Fare, accommodation & Perdiem/Subsistence Allowance will not be paid to Volunteers
